Women Leaders in Pediatric Oncology - Flagship Event Coming Tomorrow

The SIOP Women Leaders in Paediatric Oncology (WLPO) Network will hold its Inaugural Flagship Event on Women Leaders in Paediatric Oncology on Saturday, October 1, at 3pm CET/Barcelona as a part of the SIOP2022 Congress.

We are delighted to welcome our Inaugural Speakers:

  • Dr. Katherine Matthay, USA
  • Dr. Raya Saab, Lebanon

The Event will be moderated by WLPO Network Leaders -- Prof. Faith Gibson (Chair) and Dr. Giselle Saulnier-Sholler (Steering Group Member).

Dr. Katherine Matthay is one of the world's leading specialists in care for childhood cancer and in research on treatments. She directs a national study of the Children's Oncology Group (a research collaboration supported by the National Cancer Institute) to test new therapies for neuroblastoma, a cancer that develops in nerve cells and most often affects young children. She and her colleagues demonstrated that an innovative treatment – which combined chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation and other therapies – could significantly improve outcomes for patients with neuroblastoma. After earning an undergraduate degree in chemistry at Bryn Mawr College, Matthay earned her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Colorado Denver and a fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology at UCSF.

Dr. Raya Saab received her medical degree from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, pediatric residency training at Duke University Medical Center in the USA, and pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the USA. She then returned to Lebanon where she established her career in pediatric solid tumors, and held multiple leadership positions at the Children’s Cancer Institute at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. Recently, she moved back to the USA to join Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University, where is she currently Professor of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and section head of Pediatric Oncology. Her clinical interest is in pediatric sarcomas, and her research focuses on molecular mechanisms of tumor suppression and oncogenic pathways in rhabdomyosarcoma. During her career in Lebanon, she established infrastructure for pediatric oncology research including a pediatric tumor bio-repository and a clinical research registry. Over the past decade, Dr. Saab has worked extensively on establishing clinical programs focused on improving pediatric oncology care delivery nationally within Lebanon as well as regionally through her role as the scientific director of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean (POEM) group, a collaborative group which aims to improve outcome of children with cancer across countries in the Middle East, North Africa, and West Asia region. She has published more than 85 peer-reviewed articles, and has been nominated to and received several teaching and research awards.

The Inaugural Event is open to registered Congress delegates, attending the Congress either in person or virtually. The recording of the event will be shared widely in October 2022.
